Ahead of the December 4 and 5 festival, the pair talks about honest storytelling, creative community and bringing hope to the screen.
Spencer Folmar knew he wanted to make films. After becoming a Christian in his early twenties, he began wondering where the stories were for people whose lives remained complicated.
That question helped inspire Hard Faith, a filmmaking community that makes room for struggle, difficult questions and redemption.

Hard Faith Fest NYC will bring that vision to E91 on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on December 4 and 5, 2026, with screenings, filmmaker conversations, panels, workshops and an awards show.
For McKenna Folmar, some of the most meaningful moments happen between sessions, when strangers become friends and future collaborators. Ahead of the festival, Family Media News asked the pair about their mission and what attendees can expect.
FMN: What inspired you to create Hard Faith?
Spencer: I felt like Christian media was overlooking an entire audience of people who were hurting, broken, and desperately in need of hope. These are people who might never step foot inside a church, but they might walk into a movie theater.
I started Hard Faith to bridge that gap. I wanted to create space for films that aren't afraid to confront the realities of a fallen world while still pointing people toward redemption. That's what we mean by “Telling Stories That Liberate.”
FMN: What makes a story a “Hard Faith” story?
Spencer: I don't believe a Christian film needs a perfectly happy ending or a sermon wrapped up in the final scene. Sometimes the most meaningful stories are the ones that ask difficult questions and leave audiences thinking long after the credits roll.
For me, it's about telling the truth about the human condition without losing sight of God's grace.
FMN: What should a first-time attendee absolutely experience?
McKenna: We've actually had attendees meet at Hard Faith Fest and go on to make films and work on projects together! That's what makes these festivals so special to me. It's not just about watching films or attending panels - It's about finding your people!
FMN: Which confirmed NYC program highlights are you most excited about?
McKenna: I'm always excited for our Pitch Fest, which takes place on Friday! I love watching filmmakers and writers share projects they're passionate about and get real feedback from industry professionals.

But I also really love the glamorous red carpet before our Awards Show on Saturday! Everyone gets dressed up, we have interviews and photographs, and it's such a fun opportunity to celebrate all the hard work that goes into these projects.
FMN: What practical advice would you give an aspiring filmmaker attending?
Spencer: First, talk to people.
Introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you. Ask questions during the panels, attend the workshops, and get to know other filmmakers. Some of the most valuable relationships you'll build in this industry begin with a simple conversation.
That invitation extends to moviegoers, too. Two-day passes include screenings, Q&As, panels, workshops and the awards show; Pitch Fest participation and afterparties require separate tickets.
