The Last Whale Singer wraps grief, family sacrifice and a search for purpose inside a colorful underwater fantasy. Vincent belongs to a line of whales whose songs carry magical power, but the death of his parents leaves him determined to reject that calling. Ten years later, the escape of a destructive creature named Leviathan forces him into a quest that may require the very voice he has refused to use. Movieguide finds a warm emotional center in Vincent's gradual recognition that his gift can serve people beyond himself.
The review praises the animation and the movie's regard for family loyalty, friendship, community and parents willing to sacrifice for their child. It is less enthusiastic about the storytelling, warning that the plot can become tangled for a children's film and may lose younger viewers. That combination makes the movie sound better suited to children who can follow a fantasy quest and discuss its ideas afterward than to very young viewers expecting a simple ocean adventure.
